Celebrate Earth Day 2024

Celebrate Earth Day April 22nd

    …And throughout the Year

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd, has expanded over the years since that first Earth Day in 1970 to Earth Week. Many organizations have taken up the conservation banner, ranging from the global focus of Earthday.Org to our local conservation organizations.

Globally Earthday.Org works throughout the year to involve people around the world in the environmental movement.  This year’s theme is “Planet vs. Plastics” and aims to achieve a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040.  Because recycling can only accomplish so much, other approaches are required to forge a plastic-free future. EarthDay.org outlines many ways that all of us can make a difference in our everyday lives.

More locally the Lowcountry Land Trust is sponsoring Lowcountry Earth Week 2024.  Scheduled from April 22 to 28, the goal is to bring the lowcountry community together to celebrate and protect our region’s natural wonders.  Throughout the week a wide variety of volunteer opportunities, nature activities, seminars, workshops and festivals will be featured. Check www.lowcountryearthweek.org for a complete listing of events sponsored by a number of local organizations.

The Kiawah Conservancy is also planning a week-long celebration of our natural world with events throughout the week, culminating in an Earth Day Celebration on April 26th.  See www.kiawahconservancy.org for more details.

Throughout the year Seabrookers participate in many nature-related conservation activities, ranging from land conservation (www.sigsc.net) to SIPOA’s “Keep Betsey Clean” highway trash pick-up sweeps.  All of these initiatives highlighted by Earth Day engage our community and raise awareness about the importance of conservation.
