According to Seabrook Island's 2025 Guide to Marshes, Seabrook Island is home to approximately 2,000 acres of saltwater marsh, tidal creeks, and marsh islands. However, Seabrook Island’s marshes face increasing pressures from rising sea levels, development, erosion, and other changes to the coastal environment.

The salt marsh–tidal creek system is an intertidal habitat, submerged during high tide and exposed during low tide. The marsh is primarily dominated by Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass), a keystone species thriving in low-lying, saltwater-inundated areas. The extent and character of Seabrook Island’s marsh ecosystem are influenced by elevation, which affects the frequency and depth of tidal flooding. These conditions determine soil salinity and the plant species that can thrive in different areas. This dynamic relationship among elevation, tidal flow, soils, and vegetation is fundamental to the marshfront's health and underscores the importance of careful management.

Recognizing the importance of this resource, The Town of Seabrook created a Marshfront Management Plan (MMP) in 2025 to guide the protection and management of Seabrook Island’s marshfront. Recently, the SIPOA Environmental Committee received approval to build a living shoreline system to promote oyster growth and vegetation along the marsh banks.
